Ian Ehling

Ian Ehling is Director of Fine Books and Manuscripts in New York. He has appraised thousands of the rarest and most exquisite books to come to market during his 40 years in the field, and has advised prestigious collectors, libraries and institutions. He is one of Bonhams' principal auctioneers and a regular contributor to the PBS series the Antiques Roadshow.

Ian's career began in Germany in 1982. In 1993, he moved to New York to join Christie's, becoming a Senior Specialist in 2000. He joined Bonhams in 2017. Ian is responsible for many record-breaking sales including works by Vitruvius ($881,000); Newton ($2.5 million); a Columbus letter ($751,500); Einstein's violin ($516,500); Darwin's Origin of Species ($500,000); Nuremberg Chronicle ($437,812); two world auction records for Kepler scientific manuscripts ($882,375 and $1,008,375) and the sale of the Library of Ruth Bader Ginsburg ($2.4 million).
