Works by 'Indian Picasso' M.F. Husain Art Lead Bonhams South Asian Art Sale
Maqbool Fida Husain (1915-2011) Untitled (Seven Horses)

London – Works by one of the biggest names in Indian Modernist painting, Maqbool Fida Husain (1915-2011), lead Bonhams Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art on 4 June at New Bond Street, London. Untitled (Seven Horses), leads the sale with an estimate of £300,000-500,000.

Often referred to as the 'Indian Picasso', Husain was a pioneering force in shaping 20th-century Indian modernism and was one of the founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group. Born in Pandharpur, Maharashtra in 1915, Husain began his career as an artist by painting cinema billboards in Mumbai. His later works stirred controversy for including nude portrayals of Hindu deities, and with Right-wing organisations calling for his arrest, he entered into a self-imposed exile in London from 2006 until his death in 2011. Horses were a recurring theme in Husain's work, which he saw as emblems of endurance, aspiration, and transformation.

Priya Singh, Bonhams Head of Sale for Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, commented: "We have a particularly strong selection of works by Indian modernists coming in our June sale, including masterpieces by M.F. Husain, which feature his much-loved horse motifs. We have seen a strong market for works by Husain, known to many as the 'Indian Picasso' and we expect a great deal of interest. We also have five amazing works by Senaka Senanayake, indeed it's the summer of Senaka at Bonhams. "
