Footnotes

The second item includes a copy of an "Analysis of Water from our Cistern at the Kitchen Fire", for a Mr Hoyland, Western Bank, Sheffield, and dated 29 March 1851, which declares it "quite free from lead or other injurious impregnation". This may well be the family of portrait painter Henry George Hoyland (1895-1947), whose father George ran a hairdressing business from the family home.
