A collection of Natalie Wood manuscripts related to Rosalind Russell

Comprising Natalie Wood's handwritten, typed, and photocopied notes for her acceptance speech on Russell's behalf for her 1975 Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, 30 pp; 19 handwritten cue cards for her speech; and a biography of Rosalind Russell annotated by Natalie Wood, 28 pp. Together with two autograph letters signed ("Mama Rose") by Rosalind Russell, 3 pp total, 1975.
Russell and Wood first met when they portrayed mother and daughter in Gypsy (1962). In her speech, Wood compares making a movie to a summer cruise, writing that although you grow close to people, afterwards you generally go your separate ways. However, she writes of Russell, "the / filming ended, but the friendship / flowered." The two clearly shared a special bond, as shown in the heartfelt speech Wood wrote about Russell, and the letters Russell sent to Wood. The first letter, dated May 4, thanks Wood and Wagner for their gift of an azalea plant during her illness. The second letter to Natalie (whom she calls "Louise" in both letters), thanks her for accepting the SAG award on her behalf. Russell writes, "I am so grateful to you dear / friend -- for your support when / I needed it so! How I hope + / pray I can repay you. / with more love than ever! / Mama Rose."
